Camping Generators - All

  • The answer is no, not necessarily. However, inverter models do possess certain built-in advantages which can make them ideal for recreational applications. Consider the following:

  • In order to appease campground neighbors, and to comply with the modern noise-level regulations found in national forests, your recreational generator should ideally produce as little noise as possible.
  • Inverter models have built-in idle control. With the idle control engaged, your generator engine produces only enough rpm to operate whatever load has been connected to it. Not only will this cut down on noise, it reduces engine wear and increases fuel economy!
  • Designed for quiet operation, most inverters are enclosed in thick polyurethane cases with added padding for noise and vibration control. These features can reduce noise levels from 5 to 10 decibels, the difference in volume, to the ear, between an oscillating fan and a loud vacuum cleaner.

  • A CAMPING or Recreational Unit Must Be ULTRA-MOBILE

  • Mobility is particularly important when a generator will be transferred to a remote camp or location. Here are some other things to keep in mind:
  • While a heavy camping generator that is intended to power an RV air conditioner may possess wheels for enhanced mobility, rugged outdoor terrain can render them less effective, even useless. If a generator is light enough in weight to be lifted and moved easily by an average-sized adult, this can be of tremendous advantage when encountering rough outdoor obstacles.

  • CAMPING Models Must POWER Desired Equipment

  • Just like any generator, a camping unit is only useful if it can power what it needs to. One way to ensure that it will is to total the wattages of the appliances or circuits that your generator will be running, and purchase accordingly.
  • A camping generator with running watts of 3,000 should operate a modern RV air-conditioning unit of up to 13,500 btu, even at high altitudes. If your motor home or trailer contains an older model AC unit, do a trial run with a prospective generator before purchase. Most generator sellers will have demo models available for testing purposes.
  • There are advantages to inverter generator models when it comes to producing advertised power. Many traditional generators, particularly low-priced models, do not live up to manufacturer claims where output is concerned. This is due primarily to power loss between the standard alternator and a generator's outlet panel.
  • Instead of a typical mechanical alternator, an inverter employs electronic circuitry to create and transfer power - this is a reliable and efficient alternative to the traditional alternator that also significantly reduces generator weight!

View Small Non-Inverter Models - Can Be Inexpensive Inverter Alternative

  • For those wishing to save a little money, these generators are heavier - but not too heavy to be transported (normally will require two able-bodied individuals) - and louder than inverter models - best utilized in less-populated camping locations (away from tightly-packed campgrounds). But for those on a budget, they can present an acceptable alternative.

  • Installed RV Generators - Great for Travel Trailers and Motorhomes

  • These generators are designed to replace a worn-out or failed piece of original equipment in motorhome and trailer applications. Units operate on gasoline, propane, or diesel - will satisfy single or dual AC applications in Class A and C motorhomes, fifth-wheel and travel trailers, sport-utility trailers, horse trailers, and rescue vehicles. All models EPA and CARB compliant, and U.S. Forest Service approved.
