Diesel Backup Generators - Emergency Systems for Business

Diesel backup generators can make excellent backup generator power systems for a business and in some cases, homes as well. Although the diesel systems are used for a business much more often than they are used for a home, this does exclude them from home use. Diesel engines are more efficient than the gasoline, propane, or natural gas-burning power plants employed by other emergency backup generators. Diesel motors will also typically have a significantly longer lifespan than their propane and NG counterparts.

Diesel backup generators are typically used with an automatic transfer switch (ATS). The automatic transfer switch detects the utility power loss and also transfers the power source for the circuits from the utility to the generator. This sequence is all done automatically. The owner of the business or home does not need to physically flip any switches or do anything else for this transition to be completed. Once utility power is restored, the ATS detects this as well, transfers the power source from the generator back to the utility, and then shuts down the generator.

Using an ATS with the generator is a good idea and is the typical application method. However, it is not an absolutely necessity. The backup diesel generators can also be used with a manual transfer switch if that better fits your particular application. Under this manual system, the generator is then started with a key. Under this scenario, once utility power is lost, the business/home owner would start the generator and then flip the manual transfer switch which transfers over the needed circuits to generator power. When utility power is restored, this process would need to be reversed by the owner so the circuits of the building/home are once again powered by the utility and the generator is shut down.

As previously stated, the diesel units are very reliable which is a big part of their popularity. During the winter months when snow and ice storms cause power outages, having an ultra reliable emergency power system is a huge benefit. This transfers over to summer too, when running an air conditioner makes businesses and homes tolerable during hot weather. Hurricanes and tornadoes can wreak havoc on the electrical grid. We see situations every summer where people are without power for extended periods because of hurricanes and tornadoes. A backup power system can alleviate these worries and problems.
