Emergency Diesel Generators

Emergency diesel GENERATORS deliver STANDBY electricity to your BUSINESS.

Fuel-Transfer Systems
Is your business prepared to continue operating in the event of an electric utility failure? The core backup system for many companies large and small is a commercial grade generator. Good generators provide dependable power, letting your business productivity persevere in an outage. While standby models are available that run on liquid propane (also called LP or LPG), and natural gas (NG), for durability and overall efficiency, a diesel unit cannot be beat. Diesel is the fuel of choice whenever heavy amounts of power, frequent use, and (especially) a lengthy runtime are anticipated. With hurricanes, floods, tornados, earthquakes, and rough seasonal storms seemingly more inevitable than ever, the need for reliable emergency backup has also never been greater.

The smallest diesel standby we offer is rated at six kilowatts, adequate for an application of from 1200 to 1600 square feet. We like it for a home-based shop or business with average power demands. Remember that any application that utilizes substantial amounts of electricity will require a larger than average generator for its total square footage. The backup of a true commercial location (by this, we mean a manufacturing facility, garage, or anything similar) normally needs in excess of 35 kilowatts. A commercial location normally uses higher amounts of electricity per square foot than a home-based entity. Businesses that rely heavily upon commercial freezers or refrigerators (due to the electricity demands involved) probably will demand a backup generator of larger than 60 kilowatts. An average-sized restaurant (2500 square feet or so) should end up requiring in the range of 75 to 80 kilowatts.

Suppose that your REQUIREMENTS are a RESIDENTIAL generator?

There is no rule cast in stone that dictates a diesel generator cannot be used for residential standby purposes. Nevertheless, diesels in this role are relatively rare. Part of the drawback to home use of a diesel machine is the finite lifespan of its fuel, a factor entailing that there is more diesel-powered machinery to help burn the fuel not used in backup by your generator. This is enough to discourage the use of a diesel generator in most residential settings. Most home-first generators will be air-cooled units that run at 3600 rpm. In size, they top out at 20 or so kW. For fuel, they will employ either propane or natural gas. One unpublicized and frequently-ignored benefit to a diesel is that liquid-cooled units with less-intrusive 1800-rpm operation can sometimes be found in smaller sizes. Our 20 kW Winpower unit is such a machine. Boasting an 1800-rpm run speed and liquid cooling, in home applications, we like it to cover up to about 5300 square feet.

It never HURTS to solicit the HELP of a qualified ELECTRICIAN when it comes to sizing YOUR standby generator.

Undersizing (or oversizing) a portable generator can certainly be annoying. We have noticed that the annoyance increases proportionate to the amount of money spent on the generator. Annoyances aside, the problem can usually be addressed. Substituting one generator for another is relatively simple. For most folks, this is far less true of a permanently-installed standby generator model. The magnitude of the investment means that putting up with it is about the only remedy available for a poorly-sized machine. This is why T-Rex believes so strongly in consulting an electrician - as the first step in selecting a standby generator for any application, residential or commercial. Recently a customer inquired about operating an elevator in a tall tenement with a backup generator. We discovered that an elevator draws a whole lot of electricity. Fortunately, elevators are rare. Heat or air conditioning is the biggest draw of most applications. In particular, older central electric heating systems can sap generator output, and dramatically increase the size of a prospective unit.

Be AWARE of costly and UNWARRANTED generator options.

Here Is A Generac Diesel Unit With Perkins Power

You hear these words all the time when it comes to car buying. It isn't bad advice when it comes to purchasing a generator. Of course you don't want a generator that is too large for your application. Not only is the initial investment going to be greater, the model will end up costing more than necessary in the fuel it consumes. Sizing is just part of it. Features can also contribute to a higher than warranted expense. Sound insulation or muffling is a fabulous feature if the unit will be deployed in an urban or suburban location. Generally speaking, if the generator housing is optional, you will spend less for a factory-installed enclosure than you would for a custom-fabricated one - unless (big unless) you will be building the structure yourself. Handling construction of an enclosure yourself can save a lot of money, however it should not be undertaken lightly. You need to be sure that the end result adequately protects your generator investment. Rubber mounts to control vibration can make a sigificant difference in noise reduction and reliability of a machine's components. Customers sometimes inquire into the importance of certain monitoring functions of the generator controller. Do you need low and high voltage shutdowns, low-oil shutdown, auto voltage regulation, or overspeed and high-temperature shutdowns to protect your investment in a standby unit? Auto voltage regulation or AVR is a good idea if you will be applying generator power to sensitive tools or electronic devices. Low-oil shutdown is standard on most modern generators, and always a good idea. Whether or not to opt for other optional shutdown and monitoring functions depends primarily on how much you expect the machine to be used. The more the generator operates, the more useful it is to have access to monitoring information, and the likelier it will be that your load or generator will benefit from an automatic shutdown because an undetected problem has developed.
