While you are camping under the summer sky, or tailgating at the next big game, wouldn't it be handy to have a portable source of electricity to run a small fridge, operate an electric grill, or let you charge your electrical devices? You may not want to sit under the starry sky while watching Blue-Ray movies on your HD LCD TV complete with 3D glasses but there are many times when heaters, ACs, or appliances will make an outing not just more comfortable, but safe and secure - especially if that "outing" is in your own living room during a power outage. This is how RV generators for sale can provide more than simple and basic recreation.

Many RV generators for sale products offer the ultra-smooth power output you would expect from a topflight generator - along with the capacity to respond to dynamically-changing load conditions. Many also feature low engine speeds (less than the customary 3600 rpm operation of a portable generator) for reduced noise and superior engine life. Painstaking design elements preserve air flow for efficiency and heat dissipation. Most RV units are RVIA, EPA, and CARB-emissions compliant - as well as U.S. Forest Service approved, crucial when your current residence is a motorhome or large travel trailer.

What OPTIONS do you have if your MOTORHOME or CAMPER cannot support a PERMANENT RV generator?

All is not lost if you cannot utilize a permanent RV unit in your camping, trailer, or motorhome application. A portable generator will work as well as an installed model in most circumstances (simply lacks the convenience of out-of-the-way storage inside its own cabinet). The most popular size for an RV or camping portable is 2000 watts. Usually an inverter, the 2000-watt unit is light enough for easy movement, and can frequently be set up to operate in parallel with an identical generator (the output of two identical units combining to produce a more robust 4000 running watts - be aware that parallel operation does require a special connector in addition to the generators). This enhanced output (4000 running watts) will permit you to start and operate most RV air conditioners (even old model AC units with abnormally high wattage requirements). A 3500-watt non-inverter model with wheel kit harbors nearly the same capacity. While heavier and less maneuverable, a traditional generator is also far less expensive than a new inverter with identical output. Like some inverter models, traditional 3500 to 4000 watt generators are now available with remote start - a valuable feature in RV, trailer, and other camping applications. Fold-away handles make finding storage space for these machines relatively effortless. The primary drawback to a non-inverter unit is that it will produce higher decibels (standard 3600-rpm operation with no inherent idle control). The sine wave produced by a brush-style alternator (if the unit is not equipped with auto voltage regulation or AVR) can also be inadequate for your most sensitive loads (finicky tools, laptops, and other electronic gadgetry).

Installed RV gens range from roughly 4000 WATTS to 7500 or 8000 WATTS.

There are a handful of models larger than 7500 watts and others smaller than 4000 watts - but the bulk of RV Generator sales occurs within these parameters. The mid-sized unit has the most utility - is able to operate the overhead AC unit (single or double - this includes older less-efficient motorhome and trailer AC units - you absolutely need a mid-sized generator to start and run those) while often providing electricity for other purposes (luxuries like a television or laptop). Like standbys, these generators are specialty models built to occupy a confined space without overheating. Most RV generators are placed in some sort of enclosure which rests beneath the elevated body of the bus or motorhome, protected from potential damage by the chassis (in the case of a bus-based motorhome, these are the same heavy industrial chassis that underpin tour busses - most truck-based motorhomes are comparatively flimsy - as you'll discover if you happen to wreck one). Fuel choices for RV-installed models include liquid propane, standard gasoline, and diesel. As with any generator application, diesel fuel provides the best efficiency per quantity burned - in an accident, if it spills from a tank, diesel poses a significantly lower risk of ignition (and a lower risk than that of explosion) than any gas-based fuel. Installed RV generators are similar to inverters in that they are constructed to reduce noise - but make no mistake: while less noisy than portable generators, these units are not quiet. They run at 3600 rpm, the same engine speed as a portable, the same speed your lawn mower churns out in cutting mode. There is no lower rpm based upon a 25% or 50% load. Operation will be at the same 3600 - continuously - from the instant the unit cranks on, until it shuts off!

Since many NATIONAL forest CAMPGROUNDS now harbor NOISE restrictions, if you ABSOLUTELY must have electric POWER at a CAMP site, you'd better invest in an INVERTER.

You shouldn't expect to run your generator at will in any public campground. If a ranger is handy, you could receive a ticket or even be asked to leaveif you violate campground protocol. Your best chance for electricity in these restrictive conditions - unless you can find an adequate camping location away from the public campgrounds - is to utilize an inverter (for best results, shouldn't exceed 3000 watts - you'll find that the smaller units are a little bit quieter, and several decibels - even a single decibel - can make a discernible difference to the ear). Always try to be aware of standards that may be in place at a given camping location (standards unfortunately aren't uniform across the extensive spectrum of National Forest and state-run campgrounds). Also, be prepared to capitulate. Campers are a unique breed - and they take restrictions designed to enhance the camping experience (for everybody) seriously. So how does today's available inverter technology work for your RV or camper? Inverters are relatively new, their proliferation beginning fewer than ten years ago (although the technology behind them has been around longer). True, the inverter unit generates 120 non-fluctuating volts of electricity, an almost perfect sine wave, ideal for all kinds of appliances and modern gadgetry. The electricity that reaches your outlet panel must undergo several alterations before it arrives at its final destination (your plug) - first (transformation #1) AC (alternating current) output is changed to non-fluctuating direct current (DC). Then (transformation #2) a circuit-board (fully electronic) inverts the DC power into a barely-fluctuating 120 volts of AC. For you, the end user, this means that your generator can safely power not only your large loads (RV air conditioners for instance), but your most sensitive modern devices (even a brand new laptop without risking harm). Quick and maneuverable self-manufactured electricity can be extremely valuable. For example, imagine the added convenience that power on the spot could mean to your next family reunion. Backup power, like what's produced by the standby generator at your residence, can also be of benefit in an emergency or unexpected situation. Vehicle engine failure, a breakdown in the middle of nowhere, an accident, vehicular collision, or any (conceivable) similar disaster may not just interrupt your journey, it can easily leave you stranded. With backup electricity, you and your family will have power on the ready - your investment in portable electric production ensuring that the amenities of daily life are maintained in the best of times - and in the worst.
