Generator Standby Power

Backup ELECTRICITY is no LONGER just for HOSPITALS.

If You Squint, You Can Just Make Out Several Backup Generators In The Background
Obviously, medical care facilities such as hospitals will continue to need generator standby power. With so many crucial pieces of medical equipment (respirators in particular) in constant operation, standby power is not an option. Perhaps this explains why backup generators have been powering hospitals for decades. On the other hand, standby electric generator power for the home was virtually nonexistent before the 1990s. Its popularity has continued to increase steadily as extreme weather events become more commonplace, homeowners seeing the importance of standby generators home use in their emergency preparedness scenarios. Being ready for the “what if” situation can be as important for the homeowner as it is for a hospital or critical-care facility. Here is what we mean: in 2008, over 1.25 million homes and businesses in the Northeast were left without power after a major ice storm. Again in 2009, ice storms covered several states, including parts of Arkansas, West Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. Two million people ended up without power in this instance. Some residents lived without electricity for more than three weeks. These incidents had nothing to do with a hurricane, or any of the other major natural catastrophes often associated with a lengthy power loss. We frequently consider winter storms routine. They can be anything but routine. How ready are you to protect your home and family during the next storm-related blackout?

Green Is Such A Nice Engine Color, Don't You Think?

When it comes to POWER loss, one INCIDENT tends to be ENOUGH.

Many Generator Standby Power Units Arrive In Trailers - Like This One
It just takes one incident — long or short — that leaves you without power to reinforce the value of a standby electric generator. Most power outages last, at most, a few hours, most outages cannot be classified as life or death struggles against Mother Nature at her worst and most destructive - but those few hours will be enough to risk valuable electronic data, halt work at a home office, ruin food or other refrigerated items, cause uncomfortably hot summer or dangerously cold winter temperatures inside of a residence. Homeowners who have experienced these realities understand that investment in a standby electric generator is well worth the cost. Research conducted by the University of Minnesota has revealed a jump in electric blackouts of more than 100% in the USA in just the past decade - an increase in from under 50 outages to nearly 100 - and the trend doesn't appear to be shifting or slowing down. A smart power grid of the future might relieve some of the fallout, and should certainly, if it turns out to be as advertised, relieve the stresses placed on the system by our own overuse (in peak periods). Unfortunately, the smart grid is currently just theoretical. We expect that it will happen, but when it becomes a reality is anybody's guess. Emergency minded families, meanwhile, are not waiting - not when backup power solutions are so affordable and easy to access.

One Of The Critical Elements To A Standby Generator Is The Maintenance Access Its Housing Provides

Portable GENERATORS serve the SAME purpose as a STANDBY - but nowhere near as EFFORTLESSLY.

John Deere
Homeowners Todd and Michelle relied on a portable electric generator before installing a standby generator in their rural Idaho home. Portable standby generators are basically small gasoline, propane or tri-fuel (gasoline, natural gas, propane), or, occasionally, diesel-powered machines. Based on their experience with portable backup, Todd and Michelle had decided that a small gas-powered model was best for incidental uses - like the occasional job-site support required by Todd's electrical contracting business - or their family's summer camping excursions. Todd and Michelle, like many homeowners, upgraded to an installed standby electric generator because generator standby power is best and most convenient if it is wired directly into a home's circuits. While power failure is not common in their area, it does happen - and Todd and Michelle can relax, knowing that they are prepared for any grid failure. Their standby home generator runs on propane, a fuel that stores almost indefinitely in an undamaged tank with proper seal. Wired directly to the home's circuit-breaker panel, with the assistance of an automatic transfer switch, the standby unit will activate, switch from utility power to generators backup power, switch back when the utility power is restored, and shut itself off - all without Todd and Michelle or any other homeowner lifting a finger. This unmatched convenience can make the slightly higher up-front costs associated with emergency standby generators seem insignificant when the time arrives for them to be used.

Open-Skid Generators Are Popular Because Of Their Lower Cost And Weight, And Reduced Dimensions - But They Won't Work In All Applications

Propane or NATURAL gas -EITHER can be a GREAT backup-fuel CHOICE.

Here Is A Classic John Deere Tractor; Incidentally, That's A Young Mick Jagger Seen Piloting The Machine (NOT)!
Homeowner Dan W. chose a propane standby power generator for standby generators home use. When asked to explain his decision regarding fuel choice, he explained, “I just don't want there to be a problem with the natural gas supply if an earthquake happens.” Dan has a point. An earthquake is probably the lone natural disaster that could interrupt the availability of natural gas. Propane and natural gas are the two commonest fuels for standby electric generator use - and, with natural gas the clear favorite, most homeowners are obviously not as concerned about an earthquake affecting its availability as Dan W. The most potentially destructive earthquake zones in the United States are centered in the west, the cause for concern about forfeiting NG service most-relevant in these areas. As a backup fuel, natural gas has its definite advantages - namely that it can be supplied (whenever the generator requires fuel for operation) by the existing gas lines of an application. Don\t expect, however, for the natural-gas burning generator to produce as many kilowatts as the very same generator would operating on propane. The convenience of natural gas will cost you some output - 10-12% (possibly more). Propane, an incredibly stable fuel, stores safely and easily in a tank outside a home or office, and, thanks to its almost infinite shelf life, is an equally-good choice for standby generation of power purposes.

The Great Thing About These Trailered Generators Is That They Can Be Set Atop Wheels And Towed Directly To The Scene Of The Application

Look at it this way: ALL you really LOSE by being PREPARED is a little TIME and MONEY.
The Kind Of Suburban Residence That Can Usually Benefit From Standby Power

Having standby generators home use is an investment but one that is well worth the price. Dan W. tests his generator standby power every month by running all his home's electrical circuits on generator standby power for an hour or more. “It gives me a great feeling to know that my wife and family will be comfortable if we ever lose power,” he explains. Michelle and Todd B. also appreciate the feeling of being ready in the event of grid failure. “We decided to get a standby electric generator to be prepared,” says Michelle. “It was an expensive generator, but the peace of mind that comes with it is worth a lot.” Michelle is right. Steady power is essential during emergency or non-emergency outages. One standby generator can also perform multiple functions. For instance, the same generator that can run a home can operate a home-based business or a small shop or warehouse in that same location. Given today's uncertainty, everybody needs a quality backup power source to rely upon. Help your family by delivering the electricity it needs when the local utility company lets you down.
