Propane Home Generators

PROPANE home GENERATORS deliver a CONVENIENT source of backup ELECTRICITY.

This Is An Ideal Application For Propane Backup Because The Fuel's Shelf Life Is Virtually Limitless!
For most of the year, your family enjoys a steady and ample supply of energy, but this can certainly change during the worst winter months in many locations and the most cruel summer months in others. If it happens, is your family prepared to face a power outage? You may have an emergency kit or a food supply stored away, but do you have emergency power? In a world where natural disasters can strike us unawares, leaving a path of incredible destruction behind, standby electricity may have ceased to be just a luxury. Many families have chosen to make propane home generators an integral part of their backup strategy. Propane, as an emergency fuel, boasts a lifespan that is almost unlimited - entailing that it is always there and ready when the utility fails. You might say that propane provides top security when it counts.

Tis The Season For Reliable Home Backup
Research has proven that the number of yearly blackouts in the United States is roaring skyward, and, with nothing to reverse it on the horizon, this trend is likely to continue steadily (if it doesn't accelerate). Selecting propane home generators for your residential application may be among the most productive steps to security available, but it does require answering a few questions first: for instance, how much square footage will you need to cover with backup power? Your response to this has a major impact on the cost of the system, and on the style of generator purchased. We believe, particularly if you're considering a permanently-installed (standby) generator, that consulting an electrician is the best defense against ending up with an unsatisfactory or poorly-sized unit.

Very Old - But Fully Operational - Kohler Portable Generator

Do you PREFER a portable GENERATOR that must be CONNECTED and started MANUALLY, or a fully-AUTOMATIC standby MODEL?

These are commonly the two choices that face a generator buyer. A standby propane home generators unit doesn't need to be cumbersome or occupy a huge space. Standby generators are available in sizes as low as 6 kW. We've had customers who, when the electricity failed, would relish pulling the portable generator out of storage, getting it started, and connecting it to the dark house or appliances. Handling home backup this way shouldn't present a problem - unless the individual accustomed to doing it happened to be away from the premises when utility power was lost. Automatic standby generators make it easy for anybody who happens to be at home during a blackout. Here is something else to consider: portable units and air-cooled standbys operate at a lofty (and often loud) 3600 rpm. Propane generators with liquid cooling normally start (in output) at 20 to 21 kW - and some of these units run at just 1800 rpm - both quieter and longer-lasting than the 3600 rpm machine.

Be CERTAIN that the LOCATION you choose for generator PLACEMENT is a safe ONE.

For Most Home Propane Generators, Delivery Is Required To Keep Fuel Supplies Intact
This is true of both standby and portable generator models. Any generator must be positioned so as not to present a carbon monoxide risk to occupants of any nearby or adjacent structure. Standby generators (permanently installed), even though frequently larger in size, tend to cause fewer injuries than portable machines, maybe because their installation (and placement) is usually handled (or at least approved) by an experienced technician. Why the high level of danger associated with these products? Good question. Part of it is that, over the years, power equipment in general (generators included) has been poorly regulated by federal and state governments. Today, a single mid-sized generator (5500 to 6500 watts) will produce as much carbon monoxide during its operation as from six to ten idling cars. If you are relying, for home backup, on a portable propane home generators model, we recommend selecting and designating a safe location for its operation in advance - keeping to it, and ensuring that anybody else who employs the unit for home backup does the same.

Our RECOMMENDATION for powering APPLIANCES with a PORTABLE is to employ a manual TRANSFER switch.
Snow Bunny

You can always plug appliances directly into your generator outlet panel. However, using a manual transfer switch to operate entire home or building circuits is more convenient (an electrician will normally be required to install the switch). The most typical transfer-switch application we see for portable home units uses both the manual transfer switch and a power-inlet box. The switch is installed right beside the home's circuit breaker panel (usually indoors). Circuits from the breaker panel are wired into the switch. When utility power fails and someone activates the manual transfer switch, in essence it replaces (temporarily) the circuit-breaker panel, allowing generator electricity into whichever circuits are wired into it. For generator electricity to reach the manual transfer switch, either a power cord must be extended from the generator's outlet panel to the switch, or a power inlet box used. The power inlet box is installed on the exterior of the home or building, and wired to the manual transfer switch. The generator is connected, rather than directly to the transfer switch, to the switch via this power inlet box. The required power cord will frequently be much shorter, and connecting the generator when an outage occurs simpler. Use of a power inlet box also helps ensure that the generator operates in the safe and secure location you have selected for it in advance. Don't underestimate the value of this as a benefit. In an outage, things can become hectic quickly. Stress is usually high. Earlier plans, made with the best of intentions, can be completely overlooked or forgotten.
