Standby Power - Never Lose Electricity
Are you prepared to run your business in the event of a power outage?
The backbone of many businesses is a standby power generator. A good
generator will provide stability and reliability, allowing home or
business owners to continue on being productive while others are at
the mercy of their municipal power company. In some cases, these
generators are required by law if system failure may result in life
safety hazards. They produce electricity by burning liquid petroleum
(LP), natural gas (NG), or diesel—electricity your home or business
needs in the event of a disaster. Tornados, microbursts, hurricanes,
earth quakes, and even car accidents can knock out power in your area
for hours or days. Backup power systems become crucial for homes or
businesses in these situations.
Prior to generator purchase it is important to have backup
requirements checked by an electrician. Knowing whether your
electricity is single phase or 3-phase determines the type of
generator available to your needs. Motors are generally
factory-outfitted to utilize either LP, NG, or diesel fuel.
An engine with lower RPMs and a low-maintenance rust-proof aluminum
exterior would make a 27 kW unit perfect for urban or residential use.
That type of generator could power small to medium sized homes easily,
as well as large to extra-large homes of 5600 to 7400 square feet.
Even an engine that produces as little as 10kW can power a small home
or business of 1200 to 1600 square feet. Stepping up to a 130kW
3-phase unit would allow a restaurant or food seller to power a
facility of 7500 to 8000 square feet. No more perishable goods going
bad when the local power company loses power in your area. Even a
commercial warehouse of 19000 to 20000 square feet can be powered by
a 130kW standby power motor, as well as a residential compound with
two or more buildings or an extra-large home sized 26500 to 34500
square feet. The more complicated the need, the more important it is
to have an electrician help you plan your backup requirements.
Aside from power requirements and brand names like Generac, Winco, and
Winpower, there are other factors that help one generator stand out
from another. Units that offer climate protection provide greater
stability during adverse weather conditions. Sound insulation is
another feature that can be a deciding factor if noise control for
urban/suburban environments is important. Generators in residential
areas benefit greatly by this feature. Non-rusting aluminum housings
provide maintenance free upkeep. Rubber-mounted engines provide
vibration control. Rotating-field brushless alternators, liquid
cooling, electronic governors, and cast iron heads add to the premium
quality of your unit, providing reliability you can trust when you
need it to provide power. Even the decision of which fuel source your
LP, NG, or diesel standby power generator burns needs to be carefully
considered as price and availability of fuel will affect your
generators usefulness.
Disaster and power outage prevention takes proper planning, but having
a reliable standby power motor as part of your plan should be a
priority for home and commercial business owners who need constant
power by law or for who need to provide reliable services to their
community when disaster strikes.
